This Season's New Pastel

Remember how 'pink' was the IT colour that dominated most of the bleak winter chill, hence the 'pink coat' was one of the most sought after looks that came out of the season's most lust worthy item. Resembling shades of cotton candy floss dotted round catwalks and the streets, how could we all resist! Resembling clear skies and the ocean, giving fashionistas alike the optimism to hope for an early Spring in the air. There's always a subtle allure with pastels during spring that is well contrasted from the dramatic attractions of rich colours like burgundy and royal blue for autumn/winter. The softness in pastels create a look of gentle elegance but be no fool, it has the power to make quite a statement, especially when styled with sleek black. Art in Fashion II: Making Statements on High Street

Art prints in fashion are the next must-buy items on high street. Not only are they eye-catching at first sight (speaking about getting all the right attention), but also an extension of personal statements about the inner artist and fashionista. Coming from an artistic background myself, I'm instinctively drawn to unique prints and design when browsing through online or retail shops. If you haven't already spotted, there're quite a number of recurring arty motifs on dresses or skirts dotted around various high-street favourites, namely Zara and River Island (see below). Fashion has always been an extended relation to the art world; designers are the artists, garments are the artworks that translate the artists' vision and dreams. As buyers, I feel that we own a certain right to having chosen specific pieces of artistic statement pieces. They reflect our personal taste and for some, the inner values and persona we are individually.  Image courtesy of River Island

Art in Fashion I: J.W. Anderson LFW

'Art in Fashion' is the next big trend! Inspired by English painter Graham Sutherland, J.W. Anderson's latest "pretty ugly" collection at London Fashion Week (LFW) 2014 offered an artful distortion of construction over unconventional palette. British designer, J.W.Anderson has once again created a collection to challenge the audience's take on art within fashion. Photo: Isidore Montag "In plebeian terms, if "pretty ugly" were a thing, Anderson nailed it. Citing English modern painter Graham Sutherland as a reference point, Anderson appropriated the queasy colour palette of alien green, murky mustards, watery browns, moss and greys from Sutherland's paintings onto his collection. Anderson went further by employing "ugly" fabrics like corduroy, black satin and a two-toned seaweed woven mix as a personal challenge this time. Admittedly, some of these fabrics are among his most abhorred." It is the very juxtaposition
