Style Spotlight

Today's Style Spotlight is shining on our main designer/owner of Cup of Daisies, Oana Balan, as she tells us the inspirations behind the scarf designs and how the unique company name came about...

J: So tell us a bit about yourself as a designer and how you decided to design silk scarves?
O: Since I was 16 I had the dream to study and become a fashion designer. I applied to all the London universities and went for interviews, during the time, a friend of mine showed me Liberty's! Five years later I thought silk scarves designed for charity can help raise fund towards the charities and impact society.

J: How did the name 'Cup of Daisies' come about?
O: I wanted something artistic, like Alice in Wonderland, as I was just finishing my dance project and exhibition at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) at the time. I also used an imagery from the Bible, "a Fenician woman giving a cup of water to Jesus," which I thought is a symbol that unified cultures. 'Cup of Daisies' is an artistic mixture of both the elements, and the scarves are symbols of unity, bringing women around the world towards a cause.

J: Tell us what inspired you to make Cup of Daisies such a unique company by donating certain profits to the chosen charities?
O: I was a volunteer to the Try Hafan charity shop and I've always loved the idea of charity shops, so designing for charity was perfect! (though in terms of business it has a different concept!)

J: How did you go about choosing the various charity organisations?
O: Each individual charity supports a different cause-
Orange Jungle- Noah's Ark, helping the children in Wales
Bird Song- Shelter Cymru, helping the homeless in Wales
Blue Pineapple- helping the children in Asia and Africa, Merlin has just joined Save the Children
Purple Orchid- educating women in Rwanda, ADRA UK
Lady Red- designed for the breast cancer campaign, Tenovus

J: What were the inspirations behind the designs for the scarves?
O: Every charity has a purpose within the Third Sector- and that is to raise awareness of certain issues in society; and that particular factor is the inspiration, be it issues of health, homelessness, education and development etc.

J: Which is your favourite Cup of Daisies scarf and why?
O: I like all of them but Purple Orchid is the first design I made and the first charity I approached.

3 of the Hottest Accessory Trends for SS21

Just because lockdown restrictions are starting to ease doesn’t mean that you have to go out and buy a brand new outfit. Sure, you want to feel and look good at social events after a year of emotional turmoil. (We get it.) That said, sometimes all it takes is the right accessory to tap into current trends and take your style to the next level. Speaking of, here are 3 of the best accessory trends for Spring/Summer 2021 that would make the perfect addition to your existing wardrobe. Utilitarian Bags Firstly, it’s almost like the fashion industry has accounted for the fact that most of us haven’t needed a handbag in months. By introducing pretty-yet-practical options across the SS21 catwalks , they’re easing us back into the practice of carrying a bag. From Kenzo’s slouchy waist belt, to phone lanyards at Versace, to Dior’s straw grab-and-go versions, the focus is on the smaller, the better.  However, simplified, medium-size bags also did the rounds at Hermès and Prada for those who can’

'Between Bowties & Lady Butterflies'

Outfit details of the week: H&M Trend floral crop top purchased from my latest London trip two weeks ago.  Absolutely adore the print on this particular top, the combination of colours are striking yet brings together a blend of sophistication. What makes it super on trend is that it's made out of the scuba material which is super big this season, and if you haven't' noticed, the cropped length has absolutely taken over the runways! What's not to like.  Paired it with my lovely Topshop white thick cotton flared skirt for a clean crisp look. Love the contrast between the prints and clean crisp skirt.  White is the season's new black. These red hot studded kitten heels from Zara have been a good bargain from last season's sale and I've never regretted getting them.  To top it off, I've styled it with one of our very own CUP OF DAISIES scarves, and I knew instantly it had to be the Lady Red scarf. Fun fact: This particular

Art in Fashion I: J.W. Anderson LFW

'Art in Fashion' is the next big trend! Inspired by English painter Graham Sutherland, J.W. Anderson's latest "pretty ugly" collection at London Fashion Week (LFW) 2014 offered an artful distortion of construction over unconventional palette. British designer, J.W.Anderson has once again created a collection to challenge the audience's take on art within fashion. Photo: Isidore Montag "In plebeian terms, if "pretty ugly" were a thing, Anderson nailed it. Citing English modern painter Graham Sutherland as a reference point, Anderson appropriated the queasy colour palette of alien green, murky mustards, watery browns, moss and greys from Sutherland's paintings onto his collection. Anderson went further by employing "ugly" fabrics like corduroy, black satin and a two-toned seaweed woven mix as a personal challenge this time. Admittedly, some of these fabrics are among his most abhorred." It is the very juxtaposition
